Integrative Medicine

Integrative Medicine utilizes a lifestyle changes and therapies to achieve whole person healing and treatment.

LUMINOUS PSYCHIATRY builds on our knowledge of evidence based psychiatry to include our studies in global mental health, treatments and therapies, the Eastern wisdom traditions, meditation, yoga, and more.

Therapy

While psychiatric medication may be an effective and essential treatment for many persons struggling with mental health concerns, sometimes therapy is the perfect place for an individual to start their mental health journey.

For persons living with diagnosed mental illness, psychotherapy, when combined with medication has been shown to be synergistic. In other words, when therapy and medications are utilized together their effects are literally greater than the sum of their parts.

We recommend all persons consider therapy for personal development and overall wellbeing. For persons with diagnosed mental illness, we recommend a combination of both therapy and medication management for the greatest chance at and best prognosis for healing, success, and recovery.

Approach

HELLO! It's Heather Curtis MD. I chose the name 'Luminous Psychiatry' as the title for my private practice to serve as a mindful metaphor of the concept of illumination. Here, 'illumination' is likened to the process of therapy, in which aspects of the unconscious mind are brought to our conscious awareness for examination and review.

Throughout all of my travels, studies, advocacy, and outreach, my true calling has always been with my gift as a counselor, a communicator, and as a healer. I love what I do and feel it is a true privilege to be honored with the confidence's of my patients in my service to support them in their mental health journeys.

As a professional, my work has been strongly influenced by my life's experiences, my travels, Eastern and Western traditions, and is rooted in the basis of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). As a prescriber I am evidence based, direct, and I avoid initiating prescriptions for controlled substances (benzodiazepine medications) or stimulants.

In residency training I pursued additional training and certification in Global Mental Health and traumatology with an emphasis on veteran trauma and sexual violence. I enjoy working with psychiatric patients from all walks of life suffering from a wide variety of pathologies, circumstances, and stressors.

I am pursuing additional training and mentorship in Integrative Medicine and have significant experience and training in complementary medicine practices including yoga, meditation, breathwork, and various somatic and altered-state therapies. In addition to psychiatric consultation and general medication management, I am available to provide individual therapy sessions and integration services to support the progress and well-being of my patients and clients.
